Create a password hash

Filed under: Linux Tips — Tags: — althara @ 10:52 AM

On Ubuntu Lucid or newer:

mkpasswd -H sha-512 password salt

On Hardy the only options are crypt and md5. Yuck.

Note: Linux account passwords need an 8 character salt. For some reason the default salt length on mkpasswd is 12 characters. Read: Manually set the 8-character salt.
